Grounds Update June 2007

April showers bring May flowers, but not this year. As you are aware, we are in the midst of another drought. I notice a lot of home owners have the habit of watering frequently. Too much watering will lead to roots rotting in the soil. With too much water, the roots have no need to seek out water. I recommend you water less often but add more water about two to three times a week. Give the soil a chance to dry out. This will give the plants a healthier environment and will also lead to less disease pressure. We have been drying out the greens and making the roots seek water. This allows oxygen to get to the root system. During this process, we have been experiencing small areas of brown spots. These are called ‘localized dry spots’. It is as if a silicone material has coated the soil, which results in water being turned away from these areas. If you soak these areas from the surface, some will penetrate these spots but most of the water will just make the surrounding area wetter. We use a tool called a wetting fork. With this tool, we inject water and a wetting agent into the areas which are dry. This breaks up the problem area and creates a more favorable condition for moisture retention. Every spot we have checked has good roots and the grass is recovering nicely.
